Hair Removal

Photoepilation using 808 nm Diode Laser (3rd generation)

The 808 nm Diode Laser represents the new frontier of permanent hair removal, relying on laser technology. Diode laser hair removal is a treatment aimed at eliminating unwanted hair, ensuring permanent results. With the Diode Laser, treatments can be performed even in the summer, on dark skin (phototype VI) and light-coloured hair. The technology emits an “intelligent” red light (coherent light) that is attracted exclusively to the hair shaft, which the laser light uses as a conductor to directly reach the follicle bulb, thus eliminating the stem cells of the follicle (responsible for regeneration). During each session, there will be a progressive reduction in the hairs in the "anagen" (growth) phase, from 10% to 30%. After a few sessions, only a light fuzz will grow from the treated follicles, which is necessary to physiologically protect the skin. With each session, the skin will feel smoother to the touch, as the laser brings all the follicles that would normally remain under the skin to the surface, resulting in a more even and, most importantly, non-discoloured complexion.

Photoepilation using 808 nm Diode Laser: Recommendations

In order to achieve better results, it is recommended that the client follows a few precautions before, during, and after each treatment:

  1. Inform the specialised practitioner if any photosensitising medications are being used or if there is a possibility of pregnancy;
  2. 8-10 days before the treatment, carry out a light exfoliation and then moisturise the areas to be treated;
  3. Avoid sun exposure and sunbeds in the 3 days before and after the treatment;
  4. Shave the area(s) to be treated one day before the treatment using foam or soap, avoiding any irritation;
  5. During the first week after the treatment, it is important to moisturise the treated areas with a soothing cream;
  6. After 15 days from the treatment, carry out a light exfoliation of the treated areas and check for the shedding of a percentage of the affected hairs;
  7. Follow the treatment schedule as advised by the specialised practitioner

The contraindications?

Uncontrolled diabetes, heart problems, severe hypertension, and damaged, irritated skin or skin with dermatitis should never be treated. There are no results on very light, grey, or white hairs. Moles, skin spots, freckles, skin discolouration, and tattoos should be 'covered' with a white corrective pencil.

Other specific contraindications:

Dermatosis; Skin infections; Formation of keloids; Immune system problems; Epilepsy; Pregnancy; Skin cancer; Hormonal disorders; Photodermatosis; Use of photosensitive medications.

How many sessions are necessary?

The hair is destroyed when it is in the Anagen phase, that is, when it is attached to the follicle and rich in melanin. Normally, hairs in this phase make up about 15%, and the cycle renews every 3 to 4 weeks, which is why multiple sessions are necessary... on average, 8 to 10. The first sessions are every 3 to 4 weeks, and then they become less frequent, with the last ones occurring every 2 to 3 months. The entire process takes place over a period of 16 to 24 months.

Is the hair removal truly permanent?

It can be said that hair removal is permanent on 80% of hairs. There is no 100% permanent hair removal, and the correct term is Permanent Hair Removal or Progressively Permanent Hair Removal. The results are achieved in 8 to 10 sessions. The removal of hairs varies from 70% to 98% (on average 80-85%) depending on the individual and the areas treated. The destroyed hairs will never grow back, but new ones may emerge, especially in individuals with unstable hormonal levels. During puberty, when the hormonal balance changes, hair growth increases due to a rise in androgens. In this phase, fine hair that was already present and inconspicuous... becomes visible. This occurs in areas of the body where hair follicles are sensitive to hormonal stimulation. Even in adults, higher levels of androgens can stimulate dormant follicles already present in the dermis, leading to new hair growth.

In these cases, 1 to 2 maintenance treatments per year may be useful.

Is it possible to have a wax between sessions?

With waxing, the hair is pulled out from the follicle, so what is the point of the treatment if there is no longer a hair to conduct the heat to the follicle? And if we do not destroy the follicle, the hair will continue to grow and the treatment will have been wasted. As we have already said, Hair Removal is more effective the more visible the hair is. We recommend shaving 1 to 3 days before, or immediately before the session; otherwise, we will take care of it for you.

Is the treatment painful?

With the Laser, you will feel a series of light pinpricks, with a slight discomfort, different but no more bothersome than waxing.

Photoepilation: 808 nm Diode Laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Compared

Pulsed Light, while still an advanced and effective technology, has characteristics that place it at a disadvantage when it comes to photoepilation compared to the Diode Laser. Here are the main differences:

808 nm Diode Laser

  • High efficacy, permanently removes germ cells;
  • Effective on all skin types, even tanned skin;
  • No risk of burning;
  • Treatments every 30/40 days, the power and effectiveness allow for longer intervals between sessions;
  • Almost no pain;
  • Speed of execution, the multi-pulse mode allows the handpiece to glide smoothly;
  • Scientific recognition, the best universities have written papers on the effectiveness of the diode laser.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

  • Medium-High efficacy, depending on hair density, colour, and hair thickness;
  • Effective on skin types 1, 2, and 3 but does not treat tanned skin or darker skin tones;
  • Risk of burning, the light is high intensity unlike the laser, which works at low intensity;
  • Treatments every 15-30 days;
  • Low-Medium pain, depending on the area treated and sensitivity;
  • Medium speed of execution, the technique uses single pulses;
